Multiple Alarm Building Fire w/ Injuries - 30107 DuPont Blvd - Frankford

At 12:59 the Sussex EOC transmitted a box assignment bringing the Frankford, Dagsboro & Selbyville Fire Department to a reported building fire at Trotties Concrete, immediately after dispatch Frankford Asst. Chief T. Bacon reported heavy smoke visible from approx. 2 miles away & requested a working fire dispatch. E731 with a crew of (4) four responded at 13:01 & could see a large column of black smoke from the station. Both E761 & E731 arrived almost simultaneously at 13:07 hitting hydrants, E761 from the south & E731 from the north, dropping duel 5" LDH into the scene. Crews were meet with heavy fire throughout a 60’x80’ maintenance storage shed heavily involved. E761 deployed a 1 ½” attack line & while E731 deployed a 2" line & their Akron Mercury Monitor. As crews were imitating fire attack & trying to open up the bldg for fire attack, several large explosions took place from numerous propane, acetylene, oxygen & gas tanks. Also at this time Frankford Deputy Chief R. Murray, who had establish the IC, advised that the house located on the property was also on fire. DVFD Lt. Hudson pulled the 300’ mall line from E731 to the residence. As Lt. Hudson & DVFD Past Chief Ennis prepared to initiate fire attack on the residence they were advised by the home owner that they had extinguished the fire which was located in the breaker box & (2) two near by outlets. After verifying this with a thermal imaging camera & killing the power Lt. Hudson returned to fire attack on the building with the Mercury Monitor, while Lt’s Betts was using a saw to open up the side “A” wall another large explosion rocked the scene. Lt. Betts then began to make cuts on the garage doors for a more effective fire attack. After the garage doors were opened up the magnitude of the fire was realized. Lt. Hudson began flowing 500 gpm via the Mercury Monitor while Lt’s Betts & Johnson operated the 2" line, E761’s crew deployed an additional 2 ½” blitz line & put the deck gun in service. With the arrival of Selbyville Truck 88, they were immediately put into service on side “A” flowing both monitors. However they fire continued to rage, the owner then advised that there was a 38” motor home, numerous compressed flammable gas bottles & approx. (20) twenty truck tires in the structure. At 13:12 IC requested single piece engine company transfers for all departments operating. Bringing Millville to Frankford, Millsboro to Dagsboro & Roxana to Selbyville. At 13:14 as crews continued to battle the blaze IC requested (2) two additional Engines, an additional Truck Co. & the Rehab unit from Roxana, IC also requested Tanker 73 to assist with water supply due the flow amounts & that all departments again be back filled. EOC filled the request sending Millsboro E831 & Truck 83, Millville Engine/Tanker 844, while bringing Georgetown to Dagsboro & Gumboro to Frankford. With the majority of the fire knock IC requested CAFS Engines from Millville & Millsboro to assist in extinguishing the flammable liquids & numerous truck tires. This request brought Millsboro’s E834 & Millville’s E846. IC also made a request for an excavator to assist in gaining access to the several remaining hot spots. IC placed the incident under control at 14:52 holding all units for an extensive overhaul. The DVFD operated until 17:04 before returning available. During the initial fire attack phase of the fire DVFD Chief Furbush who was the driver/operator of E731, suffered an injury to his lower leg, ankle & foot and was transported by DVFD BLS. Chief Furbush is home & doing well, however may need surgery for tendon damage. The cause of the fires are under investigation of the Delaware State Fire Marshals.
