Monday, June 8, 2015
At 21:30 the DVFD, Frankford EMS, Sussex County Medic 103 & EMS 100 along with DSP Aviation were alerted for a reported multiple vehicle MVC at the given location. E732 with Asst. Chief McCabe responded at 21:32 with a crew of (8) eight. EOC advised E732 they were receiving numerous reports of a MVC with at least 3 vehicles & 1 person slumped over the steering wheel. As E732 made its approach to the scene it was obvious there was more to the call then reported. Numerous PD agencies were in pursuit of the occupants of one vehicle both on foot & by vehicle, the S/B lanes were completely impassible due to scattered vehicle & wreckage. E732 arrived to find a single vehicle that was being pursued by numerous PD agencies had crossed the median & hit a second vehicle head on sending it off the roadway. This resulted in several trailing vehicles to swerve, including a tractor-trailer which almost jack knife carrying a load of poultry bio-hazard waste. The crew from E732 quickly went to work extricating a single trapped patient. Arriving DVFD EMS declared the patient from the suspect vehicle a priority 2, cancelled aviation & transported ALS by ground. Rescue Company 73 arrived and was assigned to assist with securing the vehicles & extrication. The trapped patient was extricated & transported priority 2 by ground while 1 firefighter received a hand injury requiring transport to BMC. Crews operated for over 2 1/2 hrs before coming available. The injured DVFD firefighter was release the following evening after undergoing hand surgery & is now home doing well. The incident is under investigation by the Delaware State Police.
