Fatal Mobile Home Fire - 26465 Handy Rd - Millsboro

Monday, June 8, 2015
While crews on Engine 732 & The Rescue Company were engaged in fire prevention activities at the Lighthouse Christian School a box assignment was transmitted for a mobile home fire with possible entrapment at the given location. While Engine 732 was returning to off load its children from a fire truck ride, Utility 73 w/ Chief Glenn & The Rescue Company w/ Lt. C. Hudson immediately respond with a total staffing of (9) nine. Chief L. Gum (Millsboro) & the Utility both arrived with Chief Gum reporting heavy fire & establishing IC. Rescue Company 73 was next to arrive & was met by Millsboro PD units advising they heard someone inside towards the rear of the residence. The Crew from the Rescue Co. immediately preformed a vent, enter & search with out the protection of a hand line, by making a hole in the exterior wall on the "C" side of the structure. This proved unsuccessful as conditions in the residence were quickly deteriorating. With the arrival of Engine 732 the crew from the Rescue, along with the Engine crew began stretching lines. Lt. F. Bunting & FF M. Hudson advanced a 1 ¾” smooth bore line through the rear door on the “D” side & began an aggressive interior search & fire attack. They were met with a large amount of household debris, zero visibility & a large volume of fire. After briefly backing out to clear some furniture, Lt. Bunting & FF M. Hudson re-entered the residence & again tried to advance into the residence. With interior conditions rapidly deteriorating, the front half of the residence suffered a total collapse sending intense heat & fire through the rear of the residence. Holding their ground they kept the fire in check and prevented the fire from spreading any further then what was involved on their arrival. With the baulk of the fire knocked & being low on air Lt. Bunting & FF M. Hudson backed out & were relieved. An aggressive overhaul was started with a large amount of household material needing to be removed. During the overhaul operation Asst. Chief Dorey discover the victim buried under a considerable amount of debris in the hallway. The victim was removed & turned over the EMS & declared a priority 4. The following crew members gave a tremendous effort under intense conditions during this fateful event, Asst. Chief C. Dorey (E731), Lt. C. Hudson (R73), Lt. F. Bunting (R73), Rescue Capt. D. Betts (E732 driver/operator), Rescue Lt. D. Heath (E732), FF M. Hudson (R73), FF N. Ciampo (R73), FF J. Betts (E732), FF J. Codick (R73) & FF P. Steele (E732).
