Monday, June 8, 2015
On Saturday, 06 July 02, 1755 hrs. the Dagsboro VFD was alerted along with the Frankford VFD & Rehoboth Beach VFD as part of a 3rd alarm assignment to assist the Millville VFD with a marsh & woods in Cedar Neck. The Dagsboro VFD was originally alerted at 1733 hrs. to transfer 1 Engine Co. to stand-by at Millville VFD. However at this was changed when 84 command requested a 3rd alarm struck. Engine 732 which was already on the cover assignment checked on the air at 1755 hrs. under the command of Captain Townsend and advised to report to the staging area on Cedar Neck Rd. and await an assignment. Brush 730 was responding at 1756 hrs. under the command of Engineer Murray and advised to stage with Engine 732. This was soon changed when reports that the fire was spreading towards Bay Shore Trailer Park. Both Engine 732 & Brush 730 were assigned to report to Bay Shore Trailer Park and support Brush 840 & Brush 900. Engine 732 arrived to find both Brush 840 & Brush 900 extremely low on water, and only 1 Engine (903) supporting them. A water supply was established by hand stretching 500' of 3" supply line from Engine 732 to Engine 903 and a shuttle from a hydrant at the entrance of the park using Tanker 90 & Engine 864. Engine 732's crew along with arriving Brush 730 were assigned to halt the fire spread towards this area. The crews deployed 2 sections of 1" forestry line along with various hand tools. After approx. 90 minutes the fire break in this area was secured, but numerous hot spots along with active fire inside the fire lines remained. It was determined that additional lines needed to be deployed in this section due to hot spots flaring up and threatening the fire break. With the assistance of crews from Roxana, Rehoboth Beach, Bethany Beach, & Frankford a 200' section of 1 3/4" with a gated Y and two 300' sections of forestry line were placed in service and the area was quickly secured. After 2 hrs. of mop up and overhaul of hot spots it was determined that the area was secure enough to withdraw all personnel & equipment and turn it over to the Delaware Department of Forestry. All Dagsboro VFD units were clear and avail. at 2222 hrs. In station & off the air at 2248 hrs.
