Monday, June 8, 2015
On Tuesday, 02 July 02 at 1325 hrs. the Dagsboro VFD was alerted as a 2nd alarm assignment on a reported 40 acre wheat field fire. While still enroute to the scene and with heavy smoke in the air, as well as a full company response out of Millsboro VFD, Brush 790 requested a full response out of the Dagsboro VFD. The Sussex EOC had advised all responding units they had received numerous call reporting 40 acres of wheat spreading to the woods actively burning. Brush 790 arrived on location to find only 8 acres of cut wheat actively burning, with heavy fire and spreading. Brush 730 marked on the air at 1327 hrs. under the command of Lt. Donaway followed by Engine 736 and advised of the assignment. Engine 732 went on the air at 1328 under the command of ISO Hudson followed closely by Tanker Co. 73. While enroute Lt. Donaway requested a 1 Engine cover-up for DVFD. Brush 730 arrived at 1343 hrs. and was assigned to support Brush 830 in halting the westward spread of the fire. Next in Engine 736, with pump and roll capability & 1200 gal. booster tank was tasked with knocking down the fire still burning inside the perimeter. Engine 732 arrived and was ordered to supply Engine 833 on the northern end of the fire supported by Tanker Co. 73. After the baulk of the fire was knocked down command placed the incident under control with units working. After an extensive mop up units began clearing at 1359 hrs. Final DVFD units cleared at 1408 hrs. and were in station & ready for service at 1414 hrs. The blaze was determined to have started by a discarded cigarette.
