New Years Day - Brush Fire - Piney Neck Rd.

At 1440 hrs. the Sussex EOC alerted the Dagsboro VFD for a reported woods fire off of Piney Neck Rd. approx. 1 mile east of Hudson St. Brush 730 marked on the air at 1441 hrs. under the command of 2nd Asst. Chief Carey and was advised that several calls reporting heavy smoke coming the area. Upon arrival of brush 730 2nd Asst. Chief Carey advised he had approx. 2 acres involved with heavy fire and rapidly spreading in all directions. Command immediately called for and assist out of Frankford VFD for a full response and a cover-up out of Millsboro VFD. Engine 736 arrived next and was assigned to try and stop the eastward advance of the the fire, and upon the arrival of Engine 732 which was ordered to try and stop the west advance of the fire. Tanker Co. 73 was ordered to remain on the hard surface and set-up water supply operations. 1st Asst. Chief Glenn was assigned as operations and after competing a size up advised the fire line had extended well past the attack lines in place and spreading rapidly. At this time Brush 760 & Engine 762 both were approaching and requesting assignment and were ordered to the west and north end of the fire line. At this time Command requested a response out of the Delaware Department of Forestry and an additional brush unit out of Millsboro VFD to the scene. Operations advised there was a pond on the west flank of the fire line and requested that Engine 762, a smaller quick attack engine, be assigned here to set-up a draft for water supply. Upon arrival of Brush 830 it was ordered to support the operations on the north and west fire lines. At 1521 hrs. command reported the situation under control holding all units, working. Upon the arrival of Department of Forestry bulldozer a fire break was cut around the area. After a final walk around operations advised command all hot shots had been extinguished and with the fire break cut felt units could start to go in service. At 1608 hrs. command placed all units in service as ready, with final units clearing the seen at 1625 hrs. A Cause has yet to be determined.
