Working Structure Fire - DuPont Blvd N/B - Frankford

On Friday, 24 May 02, The Dagsboro VFD was alerted at 0832 hrs. as part of a Box Assignment with the Frankford VFD along with SCEMS 105 for a reported Trailer fire on Dupont Blvd. south of Lazy Lagoon Rd. At 0835 hrs. Engine 731 marked on the air under the command of Asst Chief McCabe followed closely by Frankford Engine 761. Both units where advised by Sussex EOC they were receiving numerous call reporting a Mobile Home on fire with exposures to several vehicles, believed to a working alarm. Upon turning southbound on Dupont Blvd. and still 6 miles from the scene Engine 731 could observe hvy. smoke in the air. Engine 761 arrived on location at 0839 hrs. with FVFD Chief Murray in command and advised he had 3 mobile homes, several outbuildings, and numerous vehicles heavily involved and requested mutual aid from the Selbyville VFD and for Sussex to advise Station 73 to get Tanker Co. 73 enroute. Engine 731 arrived at 0840 hrs. and was ordered to pull an additional attack line from Engine 761 and support fire suppression efforts, while Rescue/Engine 763 also arriving was ordered to deploy a 3rd attack line and protect multiple vehicles and additional out buildings. Engine 732 arrived and laid a 5" supply line from the only hydrant in the area, south of the scene into Engine 761, while its crew was sent to the scene with hand tools to assist fire attack crews. At this time the Millville VFD alerted to transfer 1 Engine Co. to fill Frankford & the Millsboro VFD was alerted to Transfer 1 Engine Co. to Dagsboro. Tanker Co. 73 arrived and was set-up on the north side of the scene with support from Tanker 88 to supply Rescue/Engine 763. Rescue Co. 73 arrived and was ordered to send its manpower to assist with fire attack and start with overhaul and to set-up for rehab. with support from SCEMS Medic 105 & Amb. A-76. The situation was placed under control with units working at 0938 hrs. During overhaul crews found several unmarked 55 gal. drums leaking and began to dike the area off and called for a DNRC unit to respond. After an extensive overhaul units began clearing the scene and going available at 1034 hrs. with the last fire units clearing at 1116 hrs. The cause is under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshals Office. Several firefighters were treated on scene for minor heat exhaustion.
