On Friday April 29, 2002 at 1622 hrs. the Dagsboro & Millsboro Fire Departments were alerted on a box assignment for a reported house fire on Bunting Rd. east of Adams Rd. Engine 731 marked on the air under the command of Chief Engineer Shane Furbush and was advised initial report of fire on the #2 floor of a 2 1/2 story house. Upon arrival of Engine 731 it was a surprise to find out the house in question was DVFD firefighter John Johnson Jr.'s residence. Command was established with Chief Engineer Furbush as OIC reporting heavy fire and smoke on the #2 flr. of a 2 1/2 story wood frame structure. Crews from Engine 731 stretched a 13/4 " pre-connect to the #2 flr. and began aggressive interior attack. Engine 732 had arrived along with Engine 831 and both were assigned to support interior crews with fire suppression and a primary search. With the arrival of Ladder Co. 83 & Rescue Co. 73 both crew began ventilation and salvage work. Tanker Co. 73 arrived on location and establish water supply along with Engine 736. Interior advised command that the fire was contained to the #2 flr. with no extension to the #1 flr., but advise to have Ladder 83 make a cut through the gable to check for extension. At 1728 hrs. command placed the incident under control with units working. Crews remained on location assisting FF Johnson with salvage and overhaul until 1816 hrs when the last units went available. A cause has yet to be determined.
