Brush Fire - Hickory Hill
Monday, June 8, 2015
While FF C. Hudson was cutting grass on Thursday 13 May, a passer-by stopped and advised him of a possible brush fire on Mollyfield Rd. just down the road from him residence. FF. Hudson could smell an odor of smoke, contacted EOC and advised them to alert the DVFD and went to investigate. At 14:03 Sussex EOC alerted the DVFD for the alarm. After investigating FF. Hudson noticed that in fact the fire was on Hickory Hill Rd., and the fire could been seen & the smoke blowing towards Mollyfield Rd. FF. Hudson arrived to find an approximate 1/2 acre burning with extension into the tree tops & a high tension power line power burning. Brush 730 arrived at 14:12 under the command of Asst. Chief D. Stevens and began an aggressive attack on the woods line to prevent the further extension into the tree tops. Firefighters Hudson & Dorey pulled both the booster line & 1 3/4" pre-connect off Brush 730 and made the attack. Engine 736 arrived and established the water supply for Brush 730 and deployed a second booster line to try and cut off the head off the fire. Crews were able to knock the baulk of the fire in about 20 min. Tanker Co. 73 & Engine 731 (844) were also on scene by this time. After an extensive mop up and soaking of the area IC placed the incident under control, releasing units at 13:27. Final DVFD units cleared and were ready for service at 19:35.
