Monday, June 8, 2015
On Saturday, 15 April 2006 members of the Dagsboro, Frankford & Roxana Fire Departments gathered at the NRG - Indian River Power Plant for Powder River Basin (PRB) Coal training & a plant tour. The purpose of this training session was to have many of our mutual aid departments get familiar with the new highly volatile coal the plant is now using. The PRB Coal is highly explosive when in a powder form and can not be fought by conventional firefighting methods. It was explain to the members in attendance that a when fighting a coal fire involving PRB Coal an additive called FireAde 2000 must be added in the same manner as foam. FireAde encapsulates the hydrocarbon molecules, preventing ignition or re-ignition of the combustible materials & liquids. FireAde has a wide range of fire service applications and is being used by the DVFD outside the power plant. Members were also given a tour of the vital areas of the power plant to help familiarize them with the plant. Members of the Millville & Indian River Fire Departments were also due to attend, but were unable to due to call volumes in their districts. For more information of Fireade go to www.fireadesource.com
